WE GATHER TO WORSHIP

CALL TO WORSHIP:

Watch! Wait! The day of God is at hand!

Like the bud on a tree, God's possibilities are about to blossom!

Stay awake! The kingdom of God is very near.

We are here, watching and waiting with hope.

May God bring justice to all people this very day. We rejoice in God as children of the light!

HYMN: Angels from the Realms of Glory VU 36

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING: Hope

VOICE: Today is the second Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Hope.

VOICE: Our hope is in God, and in God’s son Jesus Christ. He is the one appointed by God to be judge of all things. He is the one through whom God has promised to save and redeem his people.

VOICE: We light this candle today to remind us that he is our hope and the hope of the world. We thank God for the promises he has made to us and for the light he has brought into the world.

{Light 2 candles}

SONG: A Candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,

a candle of hope in December's dark night.

While angels sing blessing from heaven's starry sky,

our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh.

PRAYER (unison) O God of Hope, Emmanuel, God with Us, we pray that you will send your light into our hearts at this time. Help us to be ready for the day and the hour of Christ's appearing. Live in us and help us to live in you. By the power of the Holy Spirit, transform us so that our worship, our celebration, our time of preparation, may be pleasing to you, both now, and forevermore. We continue in prayer: Our Father…. JESUS’ PRAYER

A TIME FOR LEARNING – Socks

WE DEDICATE OUR SOCKS

Blessed are you, gracious God: for you have given us life and freedom to be your people.

Blessed are you, gracious God: you have called us into the church, into this community of faith.

Blessed are you, gracious God: you have touched our hearts with hope.

For the last year the UCW hoped that we would collect coins and bills in socks.

Socks keep our feet warm.

Socks, like God’s love, are often taken for granted.

Socks, like God’s forgotten, often get run into the ground.

Accept, now, these gifts we’ve collected in our socks.

Enable the UCW and the church us to use them for the building of hope and peace in our world.As followers of Jesus we ask this blessing. Amen.

PRAYERS FROM OUR HEARTS

OFFERTORY

"As With Gladness" (81 VU v.3)

As they offered gifts most rare

at that manger crude and bare,

so may we with holy joy,

pure and free from sin's alloy,

all our costliest treasures bring,

Christ, to you, our heavenly King.

PRAYER DEDICATING OUR GIFTS: God of Advent Promise, we offer these gifts remembering the precious gift of the Christ Child. May our offerings bring hope, peace, joy and love to this congregation and to our needy world. We share what we have, thankful to you. Amen.

WE ARE SENT OUT INTO THE WORLD

BLESSING AS WE GO OUT TO BE GOD’S PEOPLE

Choral Blessing:

God, dismiss us with your blessing;

fill our hearts with joy and peace;

let us each, your love possessing,

triumph in redeeming grace;

O refresh us, O refresh us,

travelling through the wilderness. (425 t.28)
